Major Crimes Section

The Major Crime Section of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation coordinates assistance and/or investigation of homicide, attempted homicide, solicitation to commit murder, assault in the first degree, suicide, unattended death, kidnapping, robbery, arson, hostage situations, sexual assaults, sexual abuse of minors, sex exploitation, child abuse, officer involved shootings, polygraph examinations, and other activities as designated by the Division of Alaska State Troopers.

Crime Scene

The Major Crime Section consists of one Sergeant and seven Investigator positions. This group of investigators travel on very short notice to all areas of the state of Alaska to provide investigative assistance to State Trooper detachments or other Law enforcement agencies as requested. Investigators can be away from home for as few as several days or as long as several weeks, depending on the type of case and assistance required. Investigators have traveled by plane, snow machine, four wheel drive vehicles, boats, and in one case traveled approx. 500 feet below the surface of the ocean in a submarine to bring a case to a conclusion. Investigators have worked at very remote crime scene locations for days with temperatures near -50 degrees.

Investigators in the Major Crime Section are highly trained and experienced in the areas of:

  • Crime Scene Reconstruction
  • Sexual Assault / Sexual Abuse of Minor Investigations
  • Kidnapping Investigations
  • Officer Involved Shooting Investigations
  • Arson
  • Barricaded Subject & Hostage Negotiations

Investigators from the Major Crime Section also provide training at the Department of Public Safety Training Academy in Sitka, state-wide for police departments and to other criminal justice agencies.
