New Crime Lab
A larger crime lab will benefit both law enforcement agencies and the citizens of Alaska. Construction of a new crime lab is expected to last three years. Upon completion, the crime lab will have the ability to begin catching up and reinstate services lost during the past five years. The new crime laboratory facility will accommodate bringing new services to law enforcement agencies statewide and the citizens of Alaska will receive better and more timely service.
The Alaska Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory is the only accredited forensic science laboratory in the State of Alaska. Supporting both state and municipal law enforcement, Alaska Crime Lab scientists objective findings either establish or eliminate a link between or among a suspect, victim, crime scene, weapon, narcotic, or other form of evidence. Their expert testimony aids in the investigation, prosecution, and defense of criminal defendants.
New technologies and disciplines are available in the field of forensic science to expand and enhance the evidence examination ability of the State. What the existing lab lacks is the space to facilitate these. Furthermore, while the quality of work, both past and present, is not in question, the current building has exceeded its useful life as a forensic laboratory. To continue in its vital mission, the Alaska Crime Lab must update and expand.
