A Detachment -------------------------------------- Location: Port Armstrong Case Number: 09-90500 Type: SAR Text: On 10-5-09, at 1609 hours, AST received a report of a missing person near the Port Armstrong Hatchery about on the south end of Baranof Island.? Two men from the hatchery went to Jetty Lake and were fishing from a canoe.? They were identified as 24 year old Daniel S. Sweeney of Ohio, and 24 year old Josh Besecker of Washington.?It was reported that a gust of wind tipped the canoe over and the men had to swim for the shore. Besecker made it to the shore. Besecker was unable to locate Sweeney.?The USCG sent a helo to the area and searched the area where Sweeney was last seen but found no sign of Sweeney. Darkness and low visibility forced the helo to return to Sitka. Five workers from the hatchery also searched the shoreline of the lake. No sign of the missing person has been found.?The search will continue in the morning. The Sitka dive team has been put on alert along with Sitka Mt. Rescue for a possible morning search/body recovery. UPDATE: On 10-9-09 at 1227 hrs, the body of Daniel Sweeney was recovered by the Sitka Dive Team.?The body is currently at a Sitka funeral home awaiting transport to the State Medical Examiner?s office in anchorage. Landvatter Received Monday, October 12, 2009 9:12 AM and posted Monday, October 12, 2009 9:34 AM Location: Sitka Case Number: 09-86390 Type: Missing Person Text: On 9-21-09, at about 1300, 60 year Jerry Kinsey of Sitka was reported missing by his wife who suspected that he may have intentions of harming himself. A search involving the Sitka Police Department, Volunteers from the Sitka Mountain Rescue group and Alaska State Troopers was initiated in and around the Indian River area near Sitka. Search teams worked through the 24th of September, at which time the official search was suspended. On 10-9-09, a body was discovered in that area by local residents picking mushrooms. Sitka PD responded to the scene and determined that it was the body of Jerry Kinsey. The state's Medical Examiner's Office requested that the body be transported to Anchorage for further examination. Foul play is not suspected at this time. Sweeney, age 24 of Cleveland, OH was involved in a canoeing accident in which he and another 24 year old man went into the water approximately 100 yards from the shore. Sweeney was not able to make it the shore and was believed drowned. A USCG helicopter from Air Station Sitka responded, but was unable to locate the body. Starting on 10-6-09 five members of the Sitka dive team, Alaska State Troopers and volunteers from the Armstrong KETA hatchery searched the area until 1227 on Friday the 9th at which time the body of Daniel Sweeney was recovered. The body was located in about 40 feet of water approximately 50 yards from the beach. Neither man was wearing a PFD at the time of the accident. Sweeney had been working in the Sitka area for several summers. Sebesta was contacted at a residence on Via Tranquila near Wasilla while AST was serving court documents. Sebesta was remanded to Matsu Pretrial where bail was set at $1,000 C/C and CATP. During the investigation, a grey Toyota pickup bearing AK plate 1109DF pulled up to the scene. The driver was identified as Grady A. Lloyd, (34 yoa of Wasilla). Lloyd stated he was there to check on the status of one of the drivers involved in the collision. Further investigation revealed that Lloyd was driving under the influence of alcohol and had a revoked drivers license. Lloyd was subsequently arrested for DUI and DWLR. Lloyd was remanded into the Mat Su Pre Trial Facility in Palmer where he was held on $2,500 and CATP. Investigation revealed that Christina F. Ramirez-Carey-Olson, age 38 of Wasilla had assaulted a family member. Christina was arrested for Assault III and remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility without bail, pending arraignment. Investigation revealed that a blue 2000 Ford Explorer driven by 49 YOA Pennie P. Serfling of Houston failed to stop and collided with a blue 1995 Chevy Astro. The Chevy Astro driven by 36 YOA Kasheena L. Radner of Big Lake then collided with a blue 1997 Honda CRV driven by 69 YOA Anna B. Philo. Radner and one of the five passengers from the Chevy Astro were transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for treatment. Investigation revealed that Serfling was driving under the influence of alcohol. Serfling was arrested for DUI, Assault III X2, Reckless Endangerment X4, and Reckless Driving. Serfling was transported to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility where she was remanded and held on $2,500 bail. All individuals involved in the collision reported wearing their seatbelts. Both injured persons were released from Mat-Su Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Total damages are estimated at $7000. Squire Drive in Houston. Emergency Medical Services and the Alaska State Troopers responded to the residence. EMS attempted life saving procedures, but was unsuccessful and pronounced J. Welsh deceased at 1554 hours. Investigation revealed that J. Welsh had passed away from natural causes. Next of Kin was on scene and notified. State Medical Examiner's Office was contacted and released the body to Valley Funeral Home. No foul play is suspected. Investigation revealed Joshua Simpson age 20 of North Pole had assaulted a homeowner. Investigation revealed Hannah Bayless, 20 of North Pole, was traveling east on Holmes Road when she failed to yield when turning left onto Lakloey Road. Russell Steinman, 26 of North Pole, was traveling west on Holmes Road when struck by Bayless. Bayless was cited for FTY when turning left.
