A Detachment ----------------------------------------------------------- Location: Haines Case Number: 09-92128 Type: Theft II Text: On 10/13/09 Alaska State Troopers responded to a report from several Canadian citizens that miscellaneous fishing gear was stolen from outside their RV's while fishing in Haines. Investigation revealed 12 people from different parties fell victim to the thefts that occurred in a large parking pullout at 4 mile Haines Highway where several dozen RV's were parked. One victim woke at 0200 hours on 10/11/09 and heard a truck quickly departing from the pullout but could not describe the vehicle or any suspects. It is estimated that over $1,000.00 worth of fishing/camping equipment was stolen. The abuse, which involved a juvenile female, began in 2001 and was reported in January 2009. The single count consolidated a total of 10 Sexual Abuse of a Minor charges. Sentencing is scheduled for January 21st 2010 at 10:00 AM in Haines. The prison sentence range is between 15-30 years. Shay of Ketchikan on 1st Ave near Washington Street in Ketchikan. Shay had an outstanding no-bail warrant for failure to complete work service for a previous Theft III conviction. Shay was arrested without incident and transported to the Ketchikan Correctional Center where he will be held until arraignments. The drivers of the vehicles were identified as Lori Edwards, (38 yoa of Wasilla) and Laura Walls, (27 yoa of Wasilla). Investigation revealed that Edwards was driving her 2006 Toyota Matrix and made a left hand turn from Clapp Road onto KGB Rd directly in front of Walls in her 2008 Toyota Yar traveling southbound on KGB Rd causing a collision. Edwards was transported to Mat Su Regional Hospital for possible injuries. Walls reported no injuries and was released on scene. Both drivers reported wearing their seatbelts. Damage was estimated at approximately $20,000. Edwards was subsequently cited for, "driver to exercise due care to avoid a collision." Alcohol was not a factor in the collision. Kyakwok was intoxicated and on misdemeanor probation for Vehicle Theft and Criminal Mischief 4. One of the conditions of Kyakwok's probation is not to consume alcohol. Investigation revealed that Willis N. Puckett, age 79, of Columbus, MS. had died unexpectedly, from cardiac arrest, while he was on a guided bear hunt. The next of kin was notified, and Puckett's body was released to be transported to Mississippi. Other callers reported that the driver, a 38 year old female from Fairbanks, was having a medical emergency and Steese Area Fire and EMS was dispatched. Bystanders tried to help her and she left the scene driving north bound in the south bound lanes. The driver of the vehicle nearly crashed into several southbound vehicles including the responding ambulance. AST arrived in the area and located the vehicle with help from several callers. The driver of the vehicle stopped and was contacted. She was not found to be impaired by alcohol and was transported to FMH for medical evaluation. Tanape was suffering from COPD, diabetes, stomach cancer and congestive heart failure. The SME has released the body to the family for a village burial. No foul play is suspected. There was no one in the residence at the time of the fire and the fire is believed to have been caused by a candle that was left burning inside the home. The home was a total loss. Investigation revealed Maximo Lopez Jr, age 44 of Nikiski was driving the school bus when a moose entered the roadway. Lopez attempted to avoid the moose but was unable to do so. The moose was killed in the collision. There was minimal damage to the bus. No injuries were reported. Paul, 28 YOA, currently of Bethel AK, was cited by Dillingham AWT for taking a moose during a closed season, without a valid hunting license, without a valid non-resident locking tag, and possession and transportation of unlawfully taken big game. These charges stem from an unlawful moose hunt he conducted on about 11-10-08 near Aleknegik Lake Rd. when he shot a bull moose during a closed season and without appropriate license and tag. The rifle used to take the moose was seized from a co-defendant who participated in salvaging and transporting the moose.
