A Detachment -------------------------------------------- Location: Sitka Case number: 09-93568 Type: SAR Text: On 10/15/09, at 2137 hours, AST received a report from the Sitka Police Department in reference to an injured hunter near Cold Storage Lake, approximately 10 miles north of Sitka. Kyle Ferguson, age 31 of Sitka, had fallen 200 feet and separated his shoulder, and he was also reported to be mildly hypothermic. On 10/15/09, at 2156 hours, 7 members from Sitka Search and Rescue were airlifted by a USCG helicopter to the area of where Ferguson was located and then they had to repel down to his location. Due to the steep terrain in the area Ferguson had to be lowered down to the base of the lake before he could be airlifted back to Sitka. On 10/16/09, at 0845 hours, Ferguson and the members from the Sitka SAR were returned safely to Sitka and then Ferguson was transported to the Sitka Hospital for further medical attention for his injuries. The original charges were Burglary I, Burglary II, and Theft II. M. Grieve was remanded to KCC with $10,000 bail. While at the residence, State Troopers contacted Shawn Michael Ray Surls, age 22 of Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Surls had an outstanding arrest warrant on the original charge of driving while license suspended. Surls was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was remanded into custody. Bail was set at $250. Alaska State Trooper contacted Mao Lee, age 20, of Anchorage during the traffic stop. Investigation revealed Lee had an outstanding warrant for her arrest for Failure to Appear on the original charge of Shoplifting. Lee was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial where she was held on $250.00. Investigation found that Jeffrey D. Lee, age 19, of Sutton was driving north on the Glenn Highway in a 1987 Pontiac Trans Am. Todd A. Youngs, age 55, of Anchorage was also driving north on the Glenn Highway in a Tractor Trailer. Investigation revealed Youngs attempted to turn left onto Buffalo Mine Road and Lee failed to notice Youngs' vehicle in front of him slowing down to turn onto Buffalo Mine Road. Lee failed to stop and rear ended Youngs vehicle. Both Lee and Youngs reported wearing their seatbelts. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision. Lee had minor injuries to his nose and refused transportation by EMS personal. Youngs was not injured. Lee was issued a citation for Failure to Exercise Due Care to Avoid a Collision. Youngs' vehicle had approximately $500 dollars of damage done to the trailer. The Lee's vehicle was estimated to be a total loss. Belardi, age 28, of Wasilla during a traffic stop for a moving violation near Bogard Rd. When contacted Belardi provided a false name to Troopers. Investigation revealed that Belardi had an outstanding arrest warrant, for failure to appear at arraignment on the original charge of Theft in the Fourth Degree. Belardi was arrested and was remanded into MSPT with bail set at $1,000.00. When AST arrived, investigation revealed that Robert Harvey Mellin age 94, of Wasilla was deceased from a suspected self inflicted gun shot wound. Next of Kin was notified and arrived on scene. Mellin's body was transported to Anchorage for an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner's office. Subsequent investigation revealed that the driver, Richard Basnaw, 23 of Fairbanks, was driving with a revoked AK drivers license. Basnaw was issued a summons to appear in court for DWLR and was released from the scene. Basnaw's vehicle was released to a licensed driver who was a passenger in the vehicle. Investigation revealed Hawkins was intoxicated and was in violation of his conditions of release set forth by the Palmer Courthouse. Hawkins was subsequently arrested for VCOR. Investigation revealed that Ron D Debeaulieau, age 50 of Wasilla, was traveling south on Vine Road in a 2000 Ford F-150, when he struck a 1991 Chevy truck that had made a left turn in front of him, driven by Bernard Maresh, age 81 of Wasilla. There were no reported injuries, all parties reported to be wearing their safety belts. The damage for the vehicles were estimated over $ 2,000. Maresh was issued a citation for failure to yield to oncoming traffic when turning left. Hansen was called in as a (REDDI) vehicle. Investigation revealed that Hansen had driven his vehicle to the gas station and was driving while under the influence of alcohol. Investigation revealed a 1990 Chevrolet pickup towing a homemade trailer being driven by Marlo Millard, 67 of Anchorage was southbound on Meadow Lakes Road attempting to make a left hand turn eastbound on the Parks Hwy when the trailer was struck by a 1998 Chrysler sedan driven by Kyle Hettrick, 18 of Wasilla who was westbound on the Parks Hwy. Seatbelts were worn by all involved and Hettrick suffered minor injuries. Damage to Hettrick's vehicle was estimated at $6000 and damaged to Millard's trailer was estimated at $2500. George had a warrant for his arrest out of Anchorage for FTC with conditions of probation on the original charge of Assault III. He also had a warrant out of Anchorage for Burglary I and Theft III. During the investigation, another property owner in the same area noticed that his cabins near the sport fishing lodge had also been burglarized. Both owners had property stolen and had to repair broken windows and door jambs. AST investigation continues and anyone with information is asked to contact Dillingham AST at 842-5641. Napoka returned to Tuluksak to spend the rest of her time with her friends and family. Alcohol is not a factor and no foul play is suspected. Family reported that the 4 adult men had gone seal hunting by boat and had failed to return at the scheduled time. AST authorized a hasty team to respond via boat to the area where the men were reported to be hunting. The hasty team located the hunters approximately 20 miles from Shishmaref. They were successful in their hunt and were slow in returning to the village. No injuries were reported. Text: On Oct. 15, 2009 at 1845 hours, Mekoryuk Tribal Police on Nunivak Island received a report of an assault. Investigation revealed that Lindsey SHAVINGS, 18, of Mekoryuk entered a residence and assaulted a male by punching him in the head. SHAVINGS left the residence and drove around town eluding police. When the police contacted SHAVINGS, he attempted to fight the officer. The officer pepper sprayed SHAVINGS and tried handcuffing him. SHAVINGS resisted the arrest until a passerby assisted the officer. After SHAVINGS was handcuffed, he was placed into a patrol vehicle. SHAVING broke out the window and escaped. The police located SHAVINGS a short time later and took him into custody. Marijuana and packaging material was found on SHAVINGS person. Alcohol was a factor in the case. Alaska State Trooper assisted the Tribal Police in the investigation. SMITH had contact with the petitioner of the order, took his keys, and tried to get into his residence. SMITH was arrested and transported to the Fairbanks Correctional Center and held without bail. White, age 41, both of Quinhagak, AK. pled guilty in Bethel District Court to one misdemeanor count each of Commercial Fishing - Closed Waters, Commercial Fishing - Closed Period, and Unlawful Possession/Transportation/Sale of Fish. Sharp was sentenced to a total of $5500 in fines, forfieture of proceeds totalling $1987, and two years probation. White was sentenced to fines totalling $3500 with two years probation. The charges stem from the men fishing closed waters in the Kanektok River with commercial gear, fishing District W-4 Quinhagak four hours before the fishing period opened, and possessing/transporting/selling approximately 4500 pounds of illegally taken fish. AK Bureau of Highway Patrol ------------------------------------------------- Location: Wasilla Case number: 09-93258 Type: DWLS/False Information/Misuse of plates Text: On 10-14-09 at approximately 2030 hours the Alaska State Troopers Bureau of Highway Patrol South Central Team stopped a 1989 Ford Bronco for an equipment violation on the Parks Highway near Hermon Drive in Wasilla. The driver was identified as Juanita Haire (39 YOA of Wasilla). Haire was subsently arrested for false information after she provided AST with a false name initially on the traffic stop. Haire was also arrested for DWLS after it was revealed that her license was suspended. The investigation also revealed that the expiration tags on the license plate had been changed. Haire was booked into the Mat Su Pre Trial Facility on the charges of DWLS, False Information and Misuse of Plates, her bail was set at $750.00 cash. The vehicle was released to a licensed driver on scene. Investigation revealed that Pamela Baker (52 YOA of Big Lake) was driving her 2004 Chevy Tahoe northbound on Big Lake Road when she failed to stop at the intersection with the Parks Highway. The vehicle went through the intersection and came to rest in the woods. Baker was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the collision. The vehicle sustained approximately $1,000.00 in damages. Further investigation revealed that Baker was driving while under the influence of alcohol. Berg was sought for Custodial Interference II after she fled with two infant children in violation of an Alaska Court Order awarding custody of the children to the father. Berg fled with the children and remained hidden for nine days. Berg was apprehended near the Fred Meyers Store in Palmer. Investigating Troopers located the children at a residence in Wasilla in the care of their maternal grandmother. The children's father responded to the scene and took custody of the children. Berg was arrested for Custodial Interference II and was transported to MSPT where she was remanded into custody on $5000.00 bail.
