A Detachment -------------------------------------------- Location: Juneau Case number: 09-95266 Type: Failure to Register as a Sex Offender in the First Degree Text: On 10/22/09, Juneau AST initiated an investigation into Thomas Leigh-Kendall, age 39 of Juneau, failing to file his annual sex offender registration. Leigh-Kendall was convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the Third Degree in 1999 and is required to register annually. Leigh-Kendall was also convicted of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender in the Second Degree in 2009. The case is being forwarded to the DAO. Investigation revealed that on 10-20-09, at about 1500 hours, a Ford F150, driven by Connie Mills, age 61, of Gustavus, drove into the front of the Bear Track Mercantile causing about $10,000 damage to the front of the store. Mills stated that her dog had got under her feet while she was driving and she was unable to stop in time before striking the front of the store. No injuries were reported and seatbelts were not utilized. The store remains closed pending repairs. The case is still under investigation. This is a good reminder for people that like to drive with a loose dog in the car with them to restrain them while driving, so that they don't become a distraction. Twenty six year old Rachel L. Thomas of Ketchikan reported her 2008 Chevrolet pick up was struck by a 1993 Mazda 4dr driven by fifty seven year old Virginia M. White of Saxman. According to the report, Thomas was driving south on Killer Whale Ave. in Saxman when the vehicle White was operating exited a driveway while backing onto Killer Whale Ave and struck Thomas' truck. There was minor damage to both vehicles, no injuries were reported. White was issued two citations. One for unsafe backing and one for fail to carry proof of insurance. Both drivers reported that they were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. Theis, age 43, of Palmer for DUI after the vehicle she was driving was stopped at mile 50 of the Parks Highway on a REDDI report (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately). Investigation revealed that Theis was driving her vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Theis was transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and remanded into their custody. Investigation revealed that Pamela Rannals, 60 of Talkeetna, was driving her 2002 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on the Parks Highway when she lost control on the icy roadway. Rannals' vehicle slid off of the East side of the highway and rolled onto its right side coming to rest upright. Rannals' and her passenger were both wearing their seatbelts and were not injured. Rannals' vehicle sustained approximately $4,000.00 damage and was towed from the scene. Investigation revealed that Nick Xiong, 56 of Anchorage, was driving northbound in his 2002 Toyota Tacoma when he lost control of his vehicle in the icy roadway. Xiong's truck slid off of the West side of the highway and came to rest on its right side. Xiong and his passenger were both wearing their seatbelts and were not injured. Xiong's vehicle sustained approximately $2,000.00 damage and was uprighted by a tow truck and was driven from the scene. Xiong was not cited for the crash. Mariner boat motor had been stolen. The motor was described as an eighties commercial model. The engine cowling is painted silver and the lower unit is painted black. The motor was taken from his boat while it was moored on the Kuskokwim River at Red Devil. The motor is valued at $1500.00. Upon AST's arrival, the driver had fled leaving the Trailblazer abandoned in the lane of travel creating a hazard to other motorists. The Trailblazer was impounded to a place of safety. Subsequent investigation revealed the identity of the driver as Adrian Devon Herron, 21 YOA of Ft. Wainwright. Herron had never been licensed to drive but had been driving from Ft. Wainwright to the Fairbanks area and north. Herron was cited for Driving Without a Driver's License and Obstruction of Highways for intentionally abandoning the Trailblazer creating an immediate hazard for other motorists. Hernandez-Zamora attempted to avoid colliding with the moose and struck it with the front end of his 2004 Ford pickup.
