Criminal Justice Information Advisory Board

Purpose:

The Criminal Justice Information Advisory Board is established by the legislature to advise the Department of Public Safety and other criminal justice agencies on matters pertaining to the development and operation of the central criminal history repository and other criminal justice information systems. The Board provides advice about regulations and procedures, and estimates the resources and costs of those resources needed to carry out the documentation, storage, and dissemination of criminal history records in the State of Alaska.

Authority for the Board and the description of its functions is found in Alaska Statute 12.62.100.

Who is on the board?

Alaska Statute 12.62.100 also designates the departments that will be represented on the Board:

1. a member of the general public appointed by and serving at the pleasure of the governor;
2. a municipal police chief appointed by and serving at the pleasure of the governor; in making this appointment, the governor shall consult with the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police;
3. the attorney general or the attorney general's designee;
4. the chief justice of the supreme court or the chief justice's designee;
5. the commissioner of administration or the commissioner's designee;
6. the commissioner of corrections or the commissioner's designee;
7. the commissioner of health and social services or the commissioner's designee;
8. the commissioner of public safety or the commissioner's designee, who will serve as chair of the board; and
9. the executive director of the Alaska Judicial Council or the executive director's designee.

The commissioner of public safety chairs the Board, but it does not work for and is not directed by the commissioner.

When does the board meet?

By statute, the board is required to meet at least once every six months. The Board schedules its meetings quarterly, but has the latitude to adjust for circumstances.

The Board is a public board and, except for the specific functions outlined in the Alaska statutes, is open to the public. Agendas and minutes of the meetings are posted on this website for public information.
