The A.L.E.T. Program

The Alaska State Trooper’s Alaska Law Enforcement Training (A.L.E.T.) Academy, located at 877 Sawmill Creek Road in Sitka, Alaska, is recognized as one of the nation’s finest law enforcement training facilities. The campus provides everything recruits need to live and train during the program.

The primary academy building includes 3-person dorm rooms with adjoining bathrooms and traditional 4-person dorm rooms, a student lounge, a state-of-the-art gym with aerobic and weightlifting equipment, and a multi-purpose room for training drills and simulation events.

The Academy has two use-of-force simulators and multiple live-action scenario spaces. Two firearms ranges are located seven miles from campus, including the Troy Lynn Duncan Range, which features a classroom, storage area, lights, and a covered heated shooting area.

Instruction is delivered by commissioned Alaska State Troopers stationed in Sitka, supplemented by other commissioned officers and civilian instructors from across Alaska and the nation.

Classroom Instruction

Criminal justice, investigations, police procedure, constitutional law, traffic enforcement, communications, and report writing.
 

Firearms Training

88 Hours

Instruction in handgun and patrol rifle is provided during the basic academy. Shotgun is available during a follow-on course for interested agencies. Proficiency testing is conducted at the Troy Lynn Duncan Range, 7 miles from campus.
 

Emergency Vehicle Operations

60 hours

Approximately 60 hours of training is dedicated to driving and emergency vehicle operations (EVOC), including high-speed pursuit techniques and defensive driving.
 
 

Physical Fitness

Daily

Physical training and conditioning is conducted every day at 5:10 am and prepares recruits for the physical demands of law enforcement by building strength, endurance, agility, and resilience while promoting long-term wellness and injury prevention. 

Control Tactics

140 Hours

Control tactics training at the Alaska Law Enforcement Training Academy in Sitka provides recruits with the skills to safely and effectively control, restrain, and take individuals into custody while minimizing the risk of injury to officers, suspects, and the public.
 

The Academy Scheule

The ALET program runs a demanding schedule six to seven days a week. Physical conditioning, classroom instruction, practical training, and evening study are all part of every day. Recruits are expected to manage their time and meet military-style inspection standards throughout.

→ Valid driver’s license and ability to drive safely
→ General computer literacy and mathematics
→ Leadership ability and professional conduct

Academy students must maintain an overall academic average of 70% or higher to graduate and receive Alaska Police Standards Certification. After two weeks, students who have less than a 70% average are subject to dismissal. Students who fail any tests will be placed on “academic probation” and receive a test failure memorandum. Copies may be sent to their employer.

Students are required to comply with the rules and regulations of the Department of Public Safety and the University of Alaska, Southeast. They are subject to the following evaluations: performance evaluations, weekly inspections, weekly, midterm, and final academic evaluations, firearms proficiency testing, driving proficiency testing, practical performance testing, and physical fitness testing

A Typical Week Day

5:10 am

Physical Fitness & Conditioning

Running, swimming, weight training, interval and cross training. Mon–Fri. Runs until 7:00 am.

7:50 am

Classroom Instruction

Criminal law, investigations, traffic enforcement, communications, defensive tactics, and scenario training.

12:00 pm

Lunch

Meals are provided at the Academy. Students are expected to maintain quarters and common areas to inspection standards.

1:00 pm

Afternoon Training Continues
Classroom and practical instruction continues through 5:00 PM. Firearms and EVOC training occur on weekdays and weekends.

6:00 pm

Evening Study & Practical
Study time and additional practical training most weekday evenings until 10:00 PM. 

Entrance Standards

All ALET applicants must meet the following minimum standards. Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in denial of admission or removal from the program.

 

Entrance Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  •  U.S. citizenship required
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age. Note: APSC will not issue a basic law enforcement certificate to individuals under 21. 
  • Good moral character and ability to meet physical and academic requirements.
 

Automatic Disqualifiers

  • Been convicted of a felony
  • Been convicted of a misdemeanor involving dishonesty, moral turpitude, or serious physical injury within the preceding 10 years
  • Two or more DWI convictions within 10 years
  • Had APSC certification denied or revoked
  • Illegally transported, manufactured, or sold a controlled substance within 10 years, or used marijuana within one year
  • Falsified or omitted information on an APSC certification application
     

APSC Regulations

Self-Pay Applicants

It is possible to attend the DPS Training Academy as a self-pay attendee without an employer sponsor. The ALET program costs include all tuition, housing, meals, equipment, and supplies. Tuition is offset by students maintaining the facility.
