    On 10/09/2019, at approximately 2257 hours, Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 2013 red Toyota RAV4 for a traffic violation. The driver was identified as Tonja Mahoney age 49 from Soldotna. Investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol and was on conditions of release for three separate pending cases. Tonja was arrested for DUI and Violating Conditions of Release.

    Location: Kasilof
    Type: Robbery 1st, Vehicle Theft 1st times 2, Assault 3rd, Assault 4th, VCOR, Reckless Driving

    On 10/8/2019 at approximately 0014 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to an assault and vehicle theft in Kasilof. Investigation revealed a vehicle pulled up to a residence and dropped off two males who were later identified as Jeremiah Lefao age 21 from Soldotna and Tyler Sargent age 20 from Kenai. Tyler and Jeremiah stole a truck with a ATV in the back of the truck. In the process of stealing the truck the owner came out and confronted the individuals. The owner was assaulted and almost ran over by the truck. Two 17-year-old females were also involved. All parties were arrested.

    On 10/5/19 at approximately 1707 hours the Alaska State Troopers responded to an address on Glenel Ave to arrest two subjects with outstanding warrants. Sofia Costales, age 35, had 3 warrants for various theft charges. Andrew Oldenburg, age 48, had 1 warrant for Violating Conditions of Release (VCOR). During the arrest, Costales forcefully resisted and assaulted 2 Troopers. Oldenburg was arrested without incident, but was later found to have violated his conditions by consuming alcohol. Costales was transported to Wildwood Pretrial where she was remanded on her warrants and additional charges of Assault 4 on a Peace Officer, VCOR, and Resisting Arrest. Oldenburg was also transported to Wildwood and remanded on his warrant and an additional charge of VCOR.

    On 10/09/19 Bethel AST and U.S. Marshalls arrested Anthony L Washington (60 yoa of Bethel) on an outstanding arrest warrant 4BE-19-484CR for Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the third degree. Bail was set at $5,000.00 cash. Mr. Washington was placed at YKCC pending his court hearing on 10/10/19.

    On 10/09/19 Bethel AST and U.S. Marshalls with the assistance of the Nunapitchuk PD arrested Wassillie C. Brink (25 yoa of Nunapitchuk) for an outstanding warrant 4BE-19-976CR for Violating Conditions of Release for the original charge of DUI. Bail was set at $500.00 and Mr. Brink was transported to YKCC in Bethel for court on 10/10/19.

    Type: Assault in the fourth DV

    Dispatch Text:

    On 10/09/19 Bethel AST was notified of an assault in the village of Nunapitchuk. Investigation revealed Matthew Toopelook (46 yoa of Nunapitchuk) while drinking with family became upset and assaulted Nicholai Tobeluk (64 yoa) and Lucy Jones (62 yoa) both of Nunapitchuk. Lucy was medivaced top Bethel due to her injuries. Matthew was arrested for two counts of assault in the fourth degree and transported to YKCC in Bethel for his court appearance on 10/10/19.

    On 10/9/2019 at 1927 hours, the Kodiak Alaska State Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of Rezanof Dr. and Cutoff because the driver was known to have warrants. The driver, Ross Tolle, age 32 of Kodiak failed to stop. Troopers pursued Tolle for approximately 15 miles where speeds reached 90 miles per hour. Tolle eventually stopped due to mechanic problems with his vehicle. Tolle was arrested for failing to stop at the direction of a peace officer, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, VCOR, and for his two warrants. Tolle was remanded to the Kodiak jail on these charges.

AK Wildlife Troopers

    UPDATE: On 10/13/2019, at 1325 hours, Neil Durco, age 33, of Cordova was found deceased by Alaska Army National Guard MEDEVAC at the bottom of a steep chute. NOK have been notified. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers thank the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, Alaska Army National Guard, and U.S. Coast Guard for providing resources and staff dedicated to the search operation, and the Cordova Police and Fire Departments, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Cordova community and more than 50 ground-search volunteers who contributed to the search their time, physical efforts, and area expertise.

    On 10/8/19 at 1700 hours, Cordova Wildlife Troopers received a report that Neil Durco, age 33, of Cordova went hunting alone on 10/7/19 on the McKinley Trail and had not returned by 10/8/19 as expected. Durco was reportedly not prepared with gear for the weather and had minimal food rations. A Wildlife Trooper and U.S. Forest Service employee located Durco’s vehicle at the trailhead on 10/9/19, but were unable to locate Durco. Troopers are working with Cordova Police/Fire Department to muster volunteers to search for Durco. Troopers are also working with the Forest Service Crew that maintains the McKinley Trail to walk in and search for Durco. An aerial search was initially delayed due to weather; on 10/10/19 at about 1200, AKRCC notified Troopers that air assets were being launched. SAR funds have been expended and investigation continues.

    Type: Fail to Seal Brown Bear as Required and Possession of Collar Device

    On 10/09/19 at approximately 1552hours, a Fairbanks-based Alaska Wildlife Trooper contacted Kurt Schumacher, age 56 of Fairbanks, at his residence. Investigation revealed Schumacher along with his son Sepp Schumacher, age 22 of Fairbanks, killed and possessed a brown bear in GMU20D. The bear had been tagged with a tracking collar for biological purposes. The collar was tracked to the residence of Schumacher via ADF&G staff. Kurt Schumacher was found to be in possession of the tracking collar as well as the brown bear skull and hide. A citation was issued to Kurt Schumacher for failing to seal the brown bear as required within 30 days of kill with bail set at $120 in the Fairbanks District Court for the violation.

    AWT would like to take the opportunity to remind the public to please return any ear tag, collar, radio, tattoo, or other identification to ADF&G as soon as reasonable if one of these devices is found in the field or with an animal.

    Type: Littering/Polluting a Salmon Stream with a Vehicle

    Update: On 10/03/19, Mario Bruce pleaded guilty in the Fairbanks District Court to criminal charges of one count of Protection of Fish and Game and one count of Oil Pollution for putting his car in the Chena River. He received a sentence of 60 days in jail with 60 days suspended, a fine of $10,000 with $5,000 suspended, 3 years probation, and restitution ordered for car removal and DEC cleanup. He must apply for the PFD until everything is paid. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers would like to thank ADEC and the employees of the Princess Lodge for their assistance with this incident.

    On 09/03/19, the Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks received a report of a vehicle being dumped into the Chena River near the end of Chena Small Tracts Road. Initial investigation revealed the vehicle was an older model brown sedan partially sunken in the river approximately 30 feet from shore. No license plate was visible. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) was notified and assisted in containment of an oil slick in water and on the shore which was leaking from the vehicle. Incident responsibility was transferred to the Alaska Wildlife Troopers. AWT responded with a boat and was able to determine vehicle identification information via underwater photos. The vehicle owner was tracked down to Florida. Through further investigation AWT made contact with Mario Bruce, age 29 of Fairbanks on 09/06/19. Bruce ultimately admitted to dumping the vehicle into the river and failing to notify ADF&G as required regarding the vehicle. Bruce was issued a summons for polluting an anadromous salmon stream with a mandatory court date of 10/01/19 at 0830hours in the Fairbanks District Court for the violation. The vehicle was recovered from the river and removed from the scene.

    On 10/07/2019, Jacob R Buehrig ,29 of Florida, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post for commercial fishing without a 2019 crewmembers license in possession. Buehrig was cited after he was contacted while operating the commercial Tender F/V Savage during commercial dive openings for sea cucumbers and Geoducks near Duke Island.  Bail is set at $270 in the Ketchikan Court.
