Alaska State Troopers Press Release of Wednesday, May 17, 2017

AK17031848Location: Prince of Wales IslandType: Arson –Third Degree
On 5/16/17 at approximately 2145 hours, Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales Island received a report of Arson near Klawock. The investigation revealed that unknown individuals had set fire to a 2000 Ford Focus that had been parked on the primitive boat launch near eight mile Boundary road. The Klawock Fire Department responded to put out the fire, but the vehicle was a total loss. Damages are estimates to be approximately $1300.00. Multiple items of evidence were recovered from the scene, and are being routed to the State Crime Lab for fingerprint and DNA analysis. The investigation is ongoing. AK17031721Location: Copper CenterType: Fire Investigation
On 05/16/17 at approximately 1340 hours AST was advised of a grass fire near mile 102 of the Old Richardson Hwy in Copper Center. AST responded along with Dept. of Forestry wild land fire fighters, and local volunteer fire departments. Investigation revealed an unattended burn barrel started surrounding brush on fire. The fire quickly spread being pushed by the wind igniting two nearby cabins. There were no injuries reported and the State Fire Marshal’s office was notified. An estimated two acres was affected by the fire. Dept. Of Forestry assumed the fire investigation and charging responsibility.

AK17030992Location: Sheep MountainType: MVC, Negligent Driving
On 05/13/2017, at approximately 1558 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to mile 110 of the Glenn Hwy to investigate the report of a two vehicle collision. Investigation revealed, Sherdian Pegg (age 18 of Sheep Mtn.) was westbound on the Glenn Hwy in a 1998 Dodge Dakota when he crossed the center line and struck a 2002 Ford F350 traveling in the eastbound lane breaking its drivers side mirror and windshield. At the time of the collision Pegg was driving with his knee and rubbing his eyes while negotiating a curve. No injuries were reported and all occupants reported wearing seatbelts. Pegg was issued a citation for Negligent Driving and both vehicles were driven from the scene.

AK17031590Location: New StuyahokType: Trespass I, Criminal Mischief IV (DV), Resisting Arrest
On 05/16/17 at about 0214 hours, the New Stuyahok Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) received a call about a disturbance in the village. investigation revealed 29 year old Antone Petla, while intoxicated, unlawfully entered a residence and damage property of a family member. Antone resisted arrest by local Law enforcement but was successfully apprehended with no further incident. Antone was later remanded to the Dillingham jail.

AK17031736Location: KodiakType: Theft II
On 5/16/2017 at 1449 hours, the Alaska State Troopers investigated the report of a stolen 34" bronze boat prop taken from the yard of a residence on Three Sisters Way. The prop is a four blade prop with one of the blades partially shaved down. The approximately value of the prop is $3500. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to call Kodiak AST at 486-4121 or Kodiak Crime Stoppers at 486-3113.

AK17031828Location: SoldotnaType: Warrant Arrest / False Information
On 5/16/2017 at approximately 2026 hours, Alaska State Troopers contacted Elizabeth Gail Miller, age 24 of Soldotna, walking on Gaswell Road. Investigation revealed she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest for Failure to Comply with Conditions of Probation. Further, she gave false names in attempts to conceal her identity. She was arrested for the warrant and Making a False Report. She was remanded at Wildwood Pretrial Facility with bail set at $1000.

AK17031972Location: SoldotnaType: Criminal Trespass II
On May 17th, 2017 at approximately 1129 hours, the Alaska State Troopers responded to the area of KB Drive, Soldotna for a report of trespassing. Investigation revealed Daniel W. Jenkins, age 35 of Soldotna, and Rhonda I. Thompson, age 35 of Soldotna, were trespassing on the premises after being advised by AST the previous day. Jenkins and Thompson were issued misdemeanor citations for Criminal Trespass II and released from the scene.

AK17031759Location: GirdwoodType: MVC-I
On 05/16/2017 at approximately 1528 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a vehicle to vehicle collision near milepost 90 of the Seward Highway in Girdwood which was blocking the southbound lane. Girdwood Fire/EMS and Girdwood DOT responded to the scene to assist. Investigation revealed that Clive Cheong Took, age 33 of London, was driving a white 2016 Mazda 6 sedan when he turned from the Alyeska Highway onto the Seward Highway and Failed to Yield for 2011 Sterling Fleetline Class-A motorhome which was traveling southbound on the Seward Highway and driven by Lester E. Jacques, age 62 of Sterling. Cheong Took’s vehicle was struck from behind causing disabling damage to both vehicles. All parties reported wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision and declined medical assistance. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Cheong Took was issued a minor offense citation.

AK Wildlife Troopers
AK17031239Location: SewardType: Feeding Game
On 05/14/17 at 1740 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, issued a citation to David Lee Struif, 54 yoa of Seward, in Seward for Feeding Game. An investigation by Troopers revealed Struif was leaving dog food and other attractants in the woods off of Nash Road, on the Iditarod Trail, in an apparent attempt to draw in bears to the location. Bail was set at $310. An optional court appearance is scheduled in the Seward District Court.

AK17031169Location: PalmerType: Death Investigation
UPDATE: As a result of the coordinated investigative efforts of Palmer ABI, SCIU and Crime Scene Technicians from the Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory, two suspects were developed for the shooting death of Jeremie Speaker, 26 of Anchorage. The suspects were identified as Robert Barker, 38 of Palmer, and Joed Weyand, 35 of Palmer. After conferring with the Palmer District Attorney’s Office, both Barker and Weyand were arrested on 5-16-17 at about 1545 hours inside a motel in downtown Palmer by ABI and the Palmer CSU. Each were charged with Murder in the 1st degree and remanded inside Mat-Su Pretrial, in Palmer, where they were both held in lieu of no bail.
UPDATE: The SME’s office positively identified the deceased as Jeremie Speaker, 26 of Anchorage. His next of kin have been notified. Speaker’s death is believed to be the result of a homicide. When troopers responded to the scene, the deceased was found in close proximity to two burned vehicles. Those vehicles have been impounded for investigative purposes to determine if and how they are connected to the deceased. Investigation by ABI is ongoing.
On 5/14/2017 at approximately 1401 hours, AST was notified that a deceased person was found near Mile 4.8 of Knik River Road. AST responded and found a deceased male. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and took over the investigation. The body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for autopsy and positive identification. Investigation is ongoing.

AK17031387Location: FairbanksType: Missing Persons
UPDATE: On 5/17/2017 at approximately 1847 hours, all three individuals were located upstream from Nordale boat launch by search and rescue personnel. All three were transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital to be checked out and treated for what are believed to be exposure-related issues. The Alaska State Troopers would like to thank all the search and rescue volunteers for their efforts in this incident.
UPDATE: Alaska State Troopers are requesting people that live in the area of Chena Hot Springs Road or the surrounding area to please check their properties for any signs of the missing individuals. Please be sure to check out buildings or any areas where a person could hide. Anyone with any possible information regarding the whereabouts of Mr. Eyre and his two children are requested to contact AST in Fairbanks immediately by dialing 451-5100.
On 5/15/2017 at approximately 1240 hours, Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks received a report that Johnathon Eyre, 28 of Fairbanks, was missing along with his two young sons, Johnathon “LJ”, 7, and Jaxson, 4. Eyre and his sons were last known to be at their home, near mile 12 of Chena Hot Springs Road, on Saturday evening. Troopers responded to the home on 5/15/2017 but did not find any sign of them. On 5/16/2017, Alaska State Troopers again responded to the home. A search of the woods and the river is underway. If anyone has any information regarding their whereabouts, contact AST immediately at 451-5100.
