    Dispatch Text:

    On August 3, 2018 at about 11:23AM, the Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales island received a report of a theft that occurred from a vehicle parked at the Control Lake camping spot.  Several items were stolen from the bed of a 2007 Dodge Ram.  This occurred sometime between July 31, 2018 and August 1, 2018.  Anyone who may have seen anything is encouraged to contact AST at 907-225-5118.

    Dispatch Text:

    On August 3, 2018 at about 1:00PM, Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales island went to a residence in Hydaburg in an attempt to locate 40 year Biana Brisson, who had an active arrest warrant for Theft II.  Troopers located Brisson hiding in a back bedroom where she was arrested and transported to Craig Police Department where she was remanded.

    On 8/3/18 at 1353 hours, Prince of Wales State Troopers arrested 58 year old Patrick McNeill of Klawock. McNeill had an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to register as a sex offender in the second degree. McNeill was remanded to the Craig Jail without incident.

    On 8/2/18 at approximately 2207 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence on Windsor in Wasilla. Investigation revealed Randy Kurtze age 31, had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest. He was arrested, transported and remanded to MSPT where his bail was set at no bail.

    On 08/03/2018, at approximately 1830 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of Burglary on West Susitna Pkwy, in Big Lake. Investigation revealed that unknown individuals gain entry into the property. The individual’s used force to gain entry into a door. Approximately $3200.00 worth property was taken and $200.00 in damage caused to the residence. The investigation is ongoing at this time.     On 08/02/18 at 0947 hours, AST responded to the report of a deceased female at a residence on W. Shirley Road in Wasilla. Investigation revealed Sharon Hubbs, age 50, passed away during the night. Next of kin was on scene and the SME took possession of Hubbs remains. Investigation continues.

    On 08/03/18 at 0700 hours, AST performed a traffic stop on a white 1999 Hyundai for passing multiple vehicles in a no passing zone. Investigation revealed Jeffrey Clement, age 27 of Wasilla, was driving without an Ignition Interlock Device on his vehicle as required from a previous DUI conviction. Clement was issued a misdemeanor citation with a mandatory court appearance at a later date.

    On 08/03/2018, at approximately 0349 hours, AST received a call of a Disturbance on Limberlost Avenue in Wasilla. Investigation that a rock was thrown at a parked vehicle and caused approximately $200.00 worth of damage to the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing at this time.     Location: Wasilla
    Type: MICS 2, Assault 4th LEO, Resist Arrest, Escape 4th, VCOR

    Dispatch Text:

    On 08-02-18, at 1658 hours, Alaska State Troopers performed a welfare check on a male passed out in the driver seat of a red Chevrolet Blazer on Foothills Blvd at Knik Goose Bay Rd.  Upon contact Troopers observed a large amount of methamphetamine in plain view.  Troopers identified the male as Gregory J Knapp, age 33, of Palmer.  Gregory was detained by the trooper on scene and placed into a unmarked patrol car.  Gregory was able to open the rear door of the unmarked patrol car and attempted to leave.  The trooper on scene had to detain Gregory who forcefully fought being restrained.  After other Troopers arrived Gregory was placed in a patrol car equipped with a cage where he was detained without further incident.  The seized methamphetamine had a weight of 22.83 grams and a street value of over $5000.  The initial trooper sustained minor injuries during the fight with Gregory and was later released from the hospital.  Gregory was transported and remanded into Mat-Su Pretrial where he was held on the charges of MICS 2, assault in the 4th on a LEO, escape in the 4th and resisting arrest.  further Gregory was on conditions of release from a prior arrest and he was charged with VCOR for violating his condition.  Gregory was held without bail pending arraignment.

    Dispatch Text:

    On 8/3/2018 at 1315 hours, the Alaska State Troopers Violent Offenders Unit in Bethel received a report from the emergency Room in Bethel of a 16 year-old female that had been dragged behind an ATV.  Investigation revealed that Varlaam Jackson, age 54 of Kwethluk, had tried to get The juvenile to return home.  When she didn’t listen, he bound her hands with rope to the rack of the ATV and then proceeded to drag her home on the gravel road.  The juvenile has serious injuries and has been transported to Anchorage via medevac and is expected to undergo several surgeries.  Alcohol is not a factor in Varlaam’s actions. 

    Varlaam Jackson was arrested for Assault in the First Degree and remanded to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center.

    On 8-3-18 at approximately 0417 hours Alaska State Troopers contacted Ann M. Albright (age 57 from Arizona) as the driver of an 2010 Toyota RAV-4, during a traffic stop for a moving violation near mile 1321 of the Alaska Highway.  Investigation revealed Albright had been operating her vehicle under the influence and impaired by alcohol.  Albright was arrested for DUI and held at the Tok Trooper Post where she was processed and later released on conditions of release.

    On 8-1-2018, Matsu West Troopers contacted Thomas Peek 75 YOA, and Robert Peek 46 YOA, both of Wasilla at the mouth of Fish Creek.  Both were dipnetting for salmon and had 46 salmon in their possession. Both were cited for personal use dip netting in closed waters.  Both were given a court date for arraignment of September 25, 2018, at 0830 hours in Palmer District Court.

    On 7/28/18, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, contacted Harold Geiger, age 65 of Juneau, as he was returning to his vessel in Gilbert Bay after having personal use fished for Sockeye at Sweetheart Creek.  Investigation revealed that Geiger was in possession of Sockeye that had not been logged on his permit as required.  Geiger was issued a $210.00 citation in the District Court at Juneau for failing to log the salmon as required.

    On 8/2/18, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, contacted James Vandebunte, age 55 of Wrangell, captain and permit-holder on the F/V Brown Sugar, after he had been observed commercial gillnetting within the closed waters of Limestone Inlet on 7/18/18.  Vandebunte was issued a strict liability citation for commercial gillnetting closed waters and has a mandatory court appearance in the District Court at Juneau.

    Type: Mutilate/Disfigure Subsistence Dungeness Crab, Halibut Violations

    On 8/2/18, at approximately 2225 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, contacted Clarence (Keith) Skaflestad, age 49 of Juneau, as he was returning to Auke Bay Harbor from a fishing trip.  Investigation revealed that Skaflestad was in possession of a large garbage bag full of Dungeness crab that had been mutilated in a way that prevented the determination of size.  Further investigation revealed that Skaflestad was in possession of subsistence taken halibut that had been mutilated in violation of NOAA regulations.  Approximately 40lbs of Dungeness crab and 100lbs of Halibut were seized as evidence.  Skaflestad was issued a strict liability citation for possessing subsistence taken Dungeness crab that had been mutilated.  The citation was issued in the District Court at Juneau.  The violations related to the halibut have been referred to NOAA for investigation.

    On 8/1/18, at 1322 hours, Kodiak AWT received a report of a REDDI vehicle leaving Willie’s Quick Mart on the Chiniak Hwy.  Investigation found Taryn Woods, 27 YOA, of Kodiak, AK had operated the suspected vehicle, a 2000 Chevrolet Lumina.  WOODS was not intoxicated, but did not have a valid driver’s license.  WOODS was issued a summons for No Valid Operator’s License.  WOODS was given an arraignment date of 8/24/18 at 0830 hours in Kodiak District Court.

    On 8/1/18, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, contacted Trinidad Contreras, age 38, of Juneau, Nathan Soboleff, age 39 of Juneau, and James Thompson, age 42 of Ketchikan, as they were returning to the Douglas boat launch after having been personal use fishing at Sweetheart Creek.  Investigation revealed that the men had retained personal use Sockeye and had failed to log the fish on their permits prior to leaving the fishing site as required.  All 3 men were issued $210.00 citations in the District Court at Juneau for failing to log their personal use salmon.

    On 7/28/18, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, contacted Dorion Hobbs, age 28, and Michael Rosche, age 28, both of Juneau, in Gilbert Bay near Sweetheart Creek.  Investigation revealed both men had participated in the personal use Sockeye fishery.  Further investigation revealed that Rosche had not logged personal use taken salmon on his permit as required, and Hobbs was not in possession of his personal use permit.  Hobbs was issued a $210.00 citation for failing to possess his permit.  Rosche was issued a $210.00 citation for failing to log personal use salmon as required.  Both citations were issued in the District Court at Juneau.

    UPDATE: The Trooper that utilized deadly force during the shooting incident has been identified as: Sergeant Brent Hatch, C Detachment St. Mary’s Patrol. He is a ten-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers.

    ORIGINAL RELEASE: On 8/2/2018 at approximately 1910 hours, Alaska State Troopers in St. Mary’s were requested to assist a Village Police Officer (VPO) responding to a Domestic Violence incident in the community. As AST arrived on scene, the suspect, identified as Carl Tyson, 28 of St. Mary’s, ran from the scene. Both AST and the VPO pursued the suspect. After a short foot pursuit, Tyson turned and advanced on AST and the VPO with a knife in hand. Tyson ignored commands to stop and drop his weapon. AST fired upon Tyson. Tyson received fatal injuries and died at the scene. Tyson’s next of kin has been notified and his body has been transported to Anchorage for an autopsy. Investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded to St. Mary’s to investigate. The trooper(s) that utilized deadly force have been placed on a 72 hours mandatory administrative leave. At the conclusion of the administrative leave, the name of the trooper(s) will be released.
