    Dispatch Text:

    On 08/28/2017, at approximately 1149 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report that a man had trespassed at a residence on Fireweed Drive, in Wasilla. Investigation revealed the suspect had entered the residence and used it as a shelter for the night.  The suspect has been identified and the charges of Criminal Trespass in the First Degree are being forwarded to the Palmer District Attorney’s Office for review.

    On 08/27/2017, at approximately 1441 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a report of a burglary at a cabin on Crooked Lake, in Big Lake. Investigation revealed someone had broken into a cabin and shed on the property.  The suspect stole multiple items including an ATV.  The estimated loss to the property  $10,000.     On 08/30/17, AST responded to a business in Big Lake who reported a tall white male had entered an employee’s truck and taken a firearm.  AST arrived and began to search the area.  The male was not located and a suspect has been identified.  Investigation continues, anyone with information should call AST at 907-745-2131.

    On 08/30/2017 at approximately 0300 hours, Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 1994 Toyota Trecel on Parks Hwy near Stanley Road in Wasilla. Investigation revealed the driver, Billy Walker age 24 of Palmer, had a warrant for his arrest for a Parole Violation on the original charge of Assault III. Walker was arrested and remanded to the custody of the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held without bail.

    On 8-29-17 at approximately 1433 hours, Village Police in Savoonga reported that 14 year old Floyd Akeya collapsed in the gymnasium during gym class. CPR was conducted, but at about 1532 hours, Akeya was pronounced deceased. State Troopers from Nome responded to investigate. The State Medical Examiner was advised and they requested that the body be transported to Anchorage for autopsy. The next of kin have been notified and the investigation continues.

    On August 30, 2017 at approximately 11:43 AM, the Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks responded to Chena Pump Road for the report of a deceased person near Palo Verde Ave. The remains of an individual were located in a tent in the woods near Chena Pump Road. The person has been deceased for some time, and the remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner for further examination. The investigation is ongoing.

    On 8/30/17 at approximately 0930 hours, Tok AST responded to the village of Tetlin for a reported disturbance. AST contacted 38 year old Tetlin resident Anthony Christiansen. Subsequent investigation revealed Anthony to be extremely intoxicated and not able to care for himself. Anthony was placed in protective custody. While being transported, Anthony made continuous threats to Troopers that he was going to kill them and their families and also challenged Troopers to fight. Anthony was ultimately charged with assault 3 and disorderly conduct and transported to FCC.

    On August 19, 2017 at approximately 1:16 pm, the Alaska State Troopers received the report of a red Lincoln Pro Mig 140 welder and a Honda EU1000 generator stolen from a residence on Alaska Range Lane in Fairbanks.     On 8-22-2017 the Alaska State Troopers in Soldotna received a report of a burglary on Groleske Avenue Nikiski. Stolen from the property was a gray 1999 GMC pickup truck and a 2002 gray and black Honda 35 hp boat motor along with other items totaling over $10,000.  AST later recovered the GMC pickup truck, investigation is ongoing.

    On 8/29/17 at about 1530 hours, Troopers and Probation Officers attempted to contact and arrest Nikolai Yakunin, 42 of Nikolaevsk, at his residence on an outstanding arrest warrant and for violating his probation conditions.  Yakunin was eventually contacted inside the residence and arrested.  Debra Spencer, 46 of Nikolaevsk, was also arrested for hindering prosecution and violating her conditions of release.  Both Yakunin and Spencer were arrested and remanded into the Homer Jail.

    On 8/29/17 at about 1626 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle theft at 16.5 mile Kenai Spur Highway in Nikiski.  Investigation revealed a black, 2013 Arctic Cat Prowler XT550 side by side, was taken from a business in the area. Anyone with information about this theft is urged to contact Soldotna State Troopers at 262-4453.

    On 8/30/17 at 1310 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence off Loomis St. in Sterling.  While at the property Troopers contacted Richard David Sisson, 36 of Sterling.  Investigation revealed Sisson is on Federal Probation out of Anchorage. for Unlawful Possession of Firearms, and has an outstanding arrest warrant for violating probation.  Sisson was arrested and later remanded at Wildwood pretrial with no bail.

AK Wildlife Troopers

    Dispatch Text:

    On 8/29/17 at approximately 1100 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island contacted Curtis John Demmert, age 31 of Hydaburg, during a routine Seine fishery patrol.  Investigation revealed that Demmert had an outstanding felony arrest warrant for the original charge of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree.  Demmert was placed under arrest and transported to the Craig jail facility where he was remanded into their custody without bail.

    Type: Sport Fish Guide Violations - Sentencing

    Dispatch Text:

    UPDATE: On 8-28-17, Stuart E. Merchant, age 75 of Klawock, AK pled guilty to four counts of wildlife crimes in the Prince of Wales District Court. In June, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Craig charged Merchant with three counts of violating halibut regulations and one count of falsifying sport fish charter logbooks after they contacted him in illegal possession of sport caught halibut. Merchant is the owner and operator of “Forget Me Knot Charters” based on Prince of Wales Island. Merchant had been convicted of similar violations in 2015 and had his sport and guiding privileges revoked for the month of August 2016. During the time that Merchant was revoked, Wildlife Troopers observed and documented him actively fishing with non-resident friends. This led to additional fines for violating his probation and another revocation for the month of August 2017. As part of the most recent conviction, Merchant was fined a total of $13,000 with $8,000 of that suspended. He was fined an additional $2,000 dollars for violating the conditions of his probation from the original 2015 case. In addition, Merchant was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 30 days suspended, his fishing and guiding privileges are suspended for 22 months and for 12 of those months he may not enter a boat in Alaskan waters. Finally, Merchant’s 26 foot guide boat and boat trailer were forfeited to the state.

     

     

     

    On 6/20/17, Alaska Wildlife Troopers Prince of Wales Post finalized a three day investigation concerning a sport fishing charter operation based out of the Klawock Harbor. The investigation resulted in Stuart E Merchant (75 y/o) being charged with one count of Unsworn Falsification and three counts of violating Limitations for Halibut set by National Marine Fisheries Service by retaining halibut with no charter halibut permit. He has a mandatory appearance in the Prince of Wales District Court.

    On 8/29/17 at approximately 1130 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island contacted Clint Bowen, age 46 of Hydaburg, during a routine Seine fishery patrol.  Investigation revealed that Bowen was working as a crew member aboard a seine vessel without a crew members license. Bowen was issued a $260.00 citation for not having a crew member license in possession.

    On 08/26/17 at 1308 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cantwell Post, investigated the report of a caribou that was not properly salvaged, in violation of 5AAC 92.220, at mile 123 of the Denali Highway. Anyone with information as to who the hunters were that failed to properly salvage the caribou, or anyone with possible leads in the case is requested to contact the Cantwell Wildlife Troopers office at 907-768-4050.

    Type: Felony Elude/DWLR/False Information/Reckless Driving/Reckless Endangerment/VCOR

    On 8/29/17, at 1913 hours, a Palmer Wildlife Trooper stopped a suspicious vehicle on Palmer Fishhook Road for a moving violation.  The driver, later identified as Forrest Shumaker, 25 of Palmer, provided a false name in an effort to conceal the fact that his license was revoked for a prior DUI and he was in violation of his Third Party Custodian conditions of release.  During the contact, Shumaker accelerated away from the traffic stop nearly striking the Trooper.  The vehicle refused to stop for Troopers and the pursuit was terminated almost immediately due to the presence of an infant and the baby's mother in the vehicle.  Another Trooper observed the vehicle nearly collide head on into oncoming traffic while being operated recklessly and also attempted to stop the car.  Shumaker refused to stop for that Trooper as well and turned into a residential neighborhood where Troopers again terminated the pursuit.  The vehicle was located on a nearby street after Shumaker had fled on foot.  Charges of Eluding 1st degree, DLWR, False Information, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment and VCOR will be forwarded to the Palmer DA's office against Shumaker.  No injuries or damage to any vehicles occurred.

    Type: Driving under the Influence, Warrant Arrest

    On 08/26/17 at 1545 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cantwell Post, arrested Jesse Daniel George, 31 yoa of Eagle River, at mile 104 of the Denali Highway for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Misconduct involving a weapon in the 4th degree, and Driving with a revoked operator’s license. George was contacted by Troopers while driving the Denali Highway hunting Caribou. After being arrested George was transported to the Cantwell Trooper Post where he refused to provide a breath sample to be analyzed for alcoholic content and was subsequently charged for Refusal to submit to a chemical test. George was issued citations for open container, a $210 fine, and refusing a preliminary breath test, a $110 fine. George also had an outstanding $500 arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a driving while license revoked charge. George was transported and booked in the Fairbanks Correctional Center.
