On July 16, 2017 at 2:09 AM, the Alaska State Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for running a red light. The vehicle failed to stop and continued traveling down University Ave. The vehicle turned into the Chena River Recreation site and the driver jumped out while the vehicle was moving and ran on foot. The vehicle sank to the bottom of the Chena River. Troopers caught the driver on foot and identified him as 43 year old Fairbanks resident Clayton Nelson. Nelson was arrested and transported to Fairbanks Correctional Center where he was remanded for Fail to Stop at the Direction of a Peace Officer and Reckless Driving.
