UPDATE: The Trooper that utilized deadly force during the shooting incident has been identified as: Sergeant Brent Hatch, C Detachment St. Mary’s Patrol. He is a ten-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers.
ORIGINAL RELEASE: On 8/2/2018 at approximately 1910 hours, Alaska State Troopers in St. Mary’s were requested to assist a Village Police Officer (VPO) responding to a Domestic Violence incident in the community. As AST arrived on scene, the suspect, identified as Carl Tyson, 28 of St. Mary’s, ran from the scene. Both AST and the VPO pursued the suspect. After a short foot pursuit, Tyson turned and advanced on AST and the VPO with a knife in hand. Tyson ignored commands to stop and drop his weapon. AST fired upon Tyson. Tyson received fatal injuries and died at the scene. Tyson’s next of kin has been notified and his body has been transported to Anchorage for an autopsy. Investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded to St. Mary’s to investigate. The trooper(s) that utilized deadly force have been placed on a 72 hours mandatory administrative leave. At the conclusion of the administrative leave, the name of the trooper(s) will be released.
