On 3/13/2019, at 1247 hours, the Haines Borough Police Department (HBPD) personnel reported to Juneau based Alaska State Troopers that they received a report of snowboarder David Dzenawagis, age 34 of Haines, had been buried in an avalanche in the area of Takshanuk Mountain (trail head is located at 7 mile Lutak Road). The two other skiers with him at the time Ted Cheney, age 36, and Theodore Hart, age 33, both of Haines, were able to extract him from the snow within 7-8 minutes and attempted resuscitative efforts. Haines Fire Department EMS personnel responded in a helicopter to the scene and pronounced Dzenawagis deceased and transported him to the HBPD morgue. Dzenawagis’ body will be sent to Anchorage for an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Haines based Alaska Wildlife Trooper assisted in the investigation. Next of kin was notified.
