Genetic genealogy is a tremendous forensic tool for the Alaska State Troopers to identify both the perpetrators of unsolved homicides and their unidentified victims. As of February 1, 2023, we have used genetic genealogy to help solve four cold cases and to identify three previously unknown victims. We are currently working to identify the remains of nine people and have submitted samples from the remains of 10 unknown people to the Medical Examiner's Office for DNA extraction, with approximately 30 more whose remains may or may not be candidates for DNA identification.
