October 29, 2020 (Anchorage, Alaska) – Along with ghosts, monsters, and princesses this weekend you will also see additional Alaska State Troopers patrolling roadways across Alaska for unsafe drivers. Troopers will be conducting focused enforcement patrols to ensure the safety of Alaskans celebrating Halloween across the state.
“The scariest thing about Halloween should be the costumes, spooky decorations, and haunted houses, but impaired drivers can turn Alaska’s roadways into a scene out of a horror movie,” said Colonel Bryan Barlow, Director of the Alaska State Troopers. “Troopers will be out in force this weekend and will show zero tolerance for impaired driving, help keep your fellow Alaskans safe by driving sober.”
If your Halloween plans involve drinking alcohol or consuming any other impairing substance, like marijuana, ensure that you have a plan to not operate a vehicle. Designate a driver, call a cab, or stay the night. Just as it is every other day of the year, buzzed driving is drunk driving. Drivers should also be on the lookout for young Alaskans walking along roads in the evening hours.
This increased enforcement from October 30th to November 1st will focus on drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs and is funded by the Alaska Highway Safety Office. Motorists witnessing others driving dangerously are encouraged to make a REDDI report (Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately) by calling 911.
