The Alaska Police Standards Council is a regulatory and quasi-judicial body that was created by Senate Bill 1, Chapter 178, and enacted by the State Legislature, effective July 7, 1972.
The Legislature granted the Council the power to adopt regulations establishing minimum selection and training standards for employment as police officers as well as other regulations for the administration of the act. In 1988 House Bill 367 expanded the council's jurisdiction to include corrections, probation and parole officers. The council is composed of 13 members appointed by the governor, and they meet formally twice each year.
