Most Alaska fire deaths are preventable

Working smoke alarms, home escape plans, and safe heating practices are the most effective tools for preventing fire deaths. The State Fire Marshal’s Office urges all Alaskans to take basic steps that save lives.

Fire Safety Resources

Fire safety information for Alaskans — smoke alarms, CO detectors, escape planning, and fire extinguisher requirements.

Smoke Alarms

Working smoke alarms are the most important early warning tool in a fire. Install on every level, inside and outside sleeping areas. Test monthly and replace the unit every 10 years regardless of whether it still activates.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and produced by combustion appliances, generators, and attached garages. Alaska law requires CO alarms in new residential construction, and are strongly recommended in all homes with fuel-burning appliances or wood stoves.

Home Fire Escape Planning

Every household should have a home fire escape plan with at least two ways out of every room and a designated meeting place outside. Practice your plan at least twice a year, including at night, so everyone in the home knows what to do in case of a fire.

Fire Extinguishers

A portable fire extinguisher can contain a small fire before the fire department arrives. Keep an extinguisher in the kitchen and any area with heating equipment. Ensure it is properly rated, charged, and inspected annually.

Alaska Fire Standards Council

The Alaska Fire Standards Council (AFSC) establishes and maintains minimum training and certification standards for Alaska’s fire service personnel. The Division of Fire & Life Safety staffs the Council and manages the certification process.
