Roadkill Salvage Program

Welcome to the Alaska Department of Public Safety (DPS) Roadkill Salvage Program. This online system replaces all previous paper applications for eligible areas listed below. Participation in these areas requires use of this system.

Please read the following information carefully before applying.

Request Online background check

  • Submit only one application per salvage team. Do not reapply after receiving an animal or at the start of a new year unless directed. Duplicate applications will be denied.
  • DPS cannot move applicants within the call list or provide your position on the list.
  • Do not contact Troopers, dispatch, or partner agencies to check your status.

About The program

In many parts of Alaska, moose that are struck by vehicles or otherwise dispatched are made available, free of charge, to registered salvage teams. Participants are responsible for properly salvaging the animal and meeting all reporting requirements.

Eligibility and Requirements

To participate, salvage teams must meet the following requirements:

  • Teams must consist of two or more individuals age 18 or older who live in the geographic area for which they are applying.
  • Submit one application per team, including all team members.
  • Individuals may only be listed on one team at a time.
  • Applications are prioritized first by geographic area, then by the order received.

Response Expectations:

  • A valid phone number is required. If you do not answer when contacted, your team will be moved to the end of the list.
  • If you decline or cannot respond, your team will be moved to the end of the list.
  • If you accept a call and fail to respond, arrive, or fully salvage the animal, your team will be removed from the program.

Salvage Responsibilities

  • Teams are responsible for complete removal of the animal, including all remains.
  • Failure to fully remove the animal may result in a citation and removal from the program.
  • Participants may be ineligible to reapply the following year if requirements are not met.

Additional Requirements (Anchorage/Mat-Su):

    • A 5-inch section of the lower jaw (with front teeth) and antlers must be submitted to the nearest Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) office within 14 days.
    • Failure to submit required specimens may result in removal from the program.

When You Are Called

If contacted by the Alaska State Troopers or Public Safety Dispatch:

  1. You must immediately accept or decline the response request (messages will not be held).
  2. A team member must arrive on scene within approximately 30 minutes.
  3. Provide the responder’s name, estimated arrival time, and vehicle description.

Teams must have sufficient personnel and equipment to safely remove and salvage the animal.
