Division of Victim Assistance & Forensic Science

To uphold the rights of victims of crime and provide victim-centered support to those who have been impacted by crime. We support the criminal justice system and those it serves through science, training, and services; through our efforts, we aim to enhance public safety, prevention efforts and community trust in Alaska.  

The Division of Victim Assistance and Forensic Science is the central hub for statewide victim-centered services within the Alaska Department of Public Safety. Our mission is to uphold the rights of victims of crime and provide victim-centered support to those who have been impacted by crime. We support the criminal justice system and those it serves through science, training, and services; through our efforts, we aim to enhance public safety, prevention efforts and community trust in Alaska.

What We Do

The Division of Victim Assistance and Forensic Science brings together key public safety programs to better serve victims, improve response efforts, and deliver expert forensic analysis.
 

State Crime Lab

Our Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory provides accurate, timely forensic analysis to support investigations and strengthen prosecutions.
 

Victim/Witness Navigator Program

Navigators offer personal guidance and support to victims and witnesses navigating Alaska’s criminal justice system.
 

Missing Persons Clearinghouse

We coordinate statewide efforts to locate missing persons and maintain Alaska’s official clearinghouse for missing persons reports.
 

Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Training

We deliver training for law enforcement and service providers focused on best practices for responding to domestic violence and sexual assault.
 

Missing & Murdered Indigenous Persons Review Commission
 

The MMIP Review Commission was established in 2025 by the Alaska Legislature. The Commission reviews unresolved MMIP cases to identify trends. 


Embedded Councils

To ensure seamless, effective assistance for victims of crimes, the following agencies are embedded within the division:
 

Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (CDVSA)

Leading Alaska’s statewide prevention, response, and policy efforts to address domestic violence and sexual assault.
 

Violent Crimes Compensation Board (VCCB)

Providing financial assistance to victims of violent crime, including help with medical expenses, counseling, and lost wages.

Information for Victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking

If someone has sexually assaulted you, you are not alone. And, you have options, such as:
  • Reporting to law enforcement
  • Participating in a medical exam
  • Going through an anonymous report process where evidence is collected, but no police report is filed
  • Being supported by an advocate throughout any option
