Public Safety Training Academy
The Department of Public Safety Academy, located in Sitka, Alaska is one of the nation's finest training facilities.
The Academy boasts a limited number of 3 person dorm rooms, each with adjoining bathrooms and many other 4 person traditional style dorm rooms. There is also a student lounge for the enjoyment of students at the Academy, a state of the art gym featuring aerobic and weight lifting equipment, and a multi-purpose room for training drills and simulation events.
The Academy also utilizes a state of the art driving simulator as well as two use of force simulators to enhance the recruits' training. Two firearms ranges are available for use as well. The newest range is the Troy Lynn Duncan Range which is located seven miles from the academy and consists of a classroom, storage area, lights, and a covered, heated shooting area.
Successful instruction is the primary focus for recruits at the Academy. Instruction comes from commissioned Alaska State Troopers stationed in Sitka, and from other commissioned officers and civilian instructors from across Alaska and across the nation. Time is dedicated to thorough training in subjects such as: criminal justice, investigations, traffic violations, communications, defensive tactics, and use of firearms.
The Alaska Law Enforcement Training Program offers specialized classes and practical training for a variety of law enforcement careers. Classes are offered by the Department of Public Safety.
