November 2019 SDEU K-9 Drug Statistics

SDEU K9s work on AST cases, but also assist other law enforcement agencies across the state in identifying illicit substances. Expanding their use and increasing the number of drug detection K9s are key items on the Public Safety Action Plan. These numbers represent the total amount of substances seized by SDEU K9s across Alaska.

2017 K9 Drug Seizure Statistics

The 2017 Annual Drug Report, highlighting trends and major drug seizures is now available. SDEU K9 teams were very busy last year: they were directly involved in 89 felony and 23 misdemeanor arrests,  as well as the seizure of 7,824 grams of heroin, 4,757 grams of cocaine, 17,766 grams of methamphetamine, and $330,918.00 cash from drug proceeds.
 

Spotlight on K9 Balu - AST

K9 Balu-Mocha is a 3 year old Belgain Malinois and began his career with AST  in May of 2017. K9 Balu has primarily been assigned to SDEU, working with a DEA Task Force Officer before being assigned to the Anchorage Airport Interdiction team under the newly formed HIDTA. To date K9 Balu has been responsible for the seizure of: 19.9 kilos of cocaine, 14.6 kilos of heroin, 20.8 kilos of methamphetamine, 9.9 kilos of other drugs, $385,000 cash, $1,327,000 in forfeited assets, and 30 firearms. When K9 Balu isn’t working, he likes to spend time playing with his two Boston Terrier brothers and playing fetch.
