Safety Tips from

Deputy Aana & Aata

  • Dress for the Weather: Always wear the right clothes for Alaska's changing weather, like jackets, hats, gloves, and waterproof boots. Since it can get cold quickly, wearing layers will help keep you warm when you’re outside.

  • Be Careful Around Water: Alaska has a lot of lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Always wear a life jacket when you’re near water or on a boat, and never go swimming or play by the water alone. Even in the summer, the water can be very cold and dangerous.

  • Watch Out for Bears: When playing outside, remember that bears live in Alaska! Make noise as you walk, stay in a group, and avoid areas where you see tracks or animal droppings. If you see a bear, stay calm, back away slowly, and don’t run.

  • Know Where You Are: Always tell an adult where you’re going, especially if you’re going into the a new place. If you get lost, stay in one spot and wait for help. Carrying a whistle or wearing bright clothes can help people find you faster.

  • Be Safe with Campfires: If you’re making a campfire, always have an adult with you and keep a bucket of water nearby. Make sure the fire is out completely before you leave. Don’t play with matches or lighters, and stay back from the flames.
